Hello, everyone,
I have the following question as mentioned exactly the same in an old post about the installation error related to MDAC (refer to the following description). I have reinstalled MDAC as suggested, but the problem still remains, can anybody advise? Thanks a lot!
-----------------------------------------
The Setup of my application installs MSDE 2000. MSDE 2000 SP3, and MDAC 2.7 along with the rest of the components. One particular user I am getting the following error:
"An error has occurred registering this installation of SQL Server Desktop Engine with MDAC"
The target computer has Windows XP Pro with SP2. This problem seems to be specific to this user as the application has been installed successfully on Xp SP2 computer with and without Windows Firewall.
Any ideas why this might be happening.
Thanks,
Pushpendra.

I recently deployed an app that installs MSDE during the installation. What a nightmare MSDE can be. Most likely, your mdac was not installed properly. You need to check your MDAC installation, to do this you can downloan an MDAC component checker from microsoft. Go to google and type
microsoft data component checker
Your second link should be the download details. The tool allows you to determine what version of MDAC you are running and then do a comparison. It tells you what files you are missing, registry errors and com errors. Once you've determined your mdac is fudged, which most likely it is, you need to reinstall it. Although i've only seen it fudged with 2.8 and reinstalling it can be somewhat tricky, you can't just download the install again. I'm not sure how 2.7 works.
I'd recommend uninstalling MSDE, to do that follow this link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/320873/EN-US/?
Don't worry about downloading the MSIZAP utility, just start at the Remove Files and Folders section and follow through the rest of the doc.
Then reinstall MSDE and hope all is well.
Good luck!
Brian
