I've got a few days off between Christmas and New Years. Anybody know a good set up for a trip? It doesn't have to be to Mexico - I just figured that would be, shall we say, "less expensive"?
If anyone knows some good deals, please let me know. And, no; I do not have a price range to be within. I just don't want to spend $10,000 American (less everywhere else with our dropping economy) for 5 days or so...
Thanks in advance
(btw., read the Christmas Party thread - sorry about the hair thing, fellas.... I had a VW too)

You couldn't have picked a worse time to try to travel inexpensively!!! Sorry, can't help you there except to suggest driving a ... ahem... VW.
Mine was a "baja bug" convertible with the chopped off front and rear, replaced with custom fiberglass panels, chromed engine, crazy '70's style competition orange paint with white panels and green cobwebbing, 15" torquethrust mags. Used to "pop wheelies" over the speedbumps at the high school.

I know.., I know. But I am contracting and did not expect to get the time off. Oil well. Maybe the lust for money will get some travel agency to cut a deal.
I had three bugs (one with a gas heater - boy did that smell, but in the Midwest it was too cold to worry) and my favorite was the square back. I did construction back then and made a great tool box for the back. My dog used to ride there too, but he hated the exhaust smell. Those cars ALWAYS ran, even if they ran badly... And when I lived in the Carolina's, I could drive and park anywhere when it snowed.
Yours was hot! I never had all the fancy additions (although one of the bugs did have the cheapy straight pipes with chrome ends). Popping a wheelie in a bug! That's a hoot (pun intended). Did you have one of the Roll Royce type front ends?
If any kind of trip in America, Mexico, or Canada comes to mind; please gimme a reply.

HMM, mine didn't have a heater at all! And being a convertible, it was rather drafty. I'm also in the midwest (central Oklahoma), and yes, winter was quite cold in that thing. I always had problems with the electrical system. I think I started it by pushing about as often as using the starter. I blew a spark plug completely out of the head once. Got the car home, and a buddy and I pulled the engine, carried it by the headers, loaded it in his El Camino, took it to Vo-Tech and put a sleeve in it. The fiberglass nose was a baja bug nose, still chopped off short, with the headlights moved into the nose, jeep style.
As for the trip, how about someplace tropical? Cancun, Cozumel, etc. Or if your into snow, Colorado, New Mexico...

Why not New Zealand? I went this time last year. Its their spring, go to http://www.skyauctions.com I picked up tickets for $600 RT from LA to Auckland. Hop a $100 flight to the north island. Then rent a house on the North island - usually around $70 US/night. and hike and play. Make sure to invite all you SQL friends for lively conversation.
Cancun is ok as well. The Yucatan penninsula is loaded with ruins, but beware it is a tourist trap for sure.
Or come to Utah and go skiing/snowboarding, you can take my spare bedroom as long as you make breakfast.

A dear friend of mine, once gave me this link. He likes to stay there regularly:

Check into Costa Rica! I'm planning to go early spring. Don't have any links for ya, but I'm sure Google will.

Where are you located? In winter, I'd head for Colorado (I live there) to ski or maybe the northwest. Ever been to Whistler?
If you want sun, then I like the Caribean, usually a deal down there somewhere. If you want to save some $$, why not drive somewhere you've never been? Before my 2nd kid, my wife got someone to watch the older one and we drove for a week through PA, saw Falling Water (Frank Lloyd's house, very cool), ski'd in the Poconos, drove to Niagra Falls, then Lake Placid. All in all a fun and relatively inexpensive trip.

I live in Maryland near Washington, DC. I don't ski anymore - back surgery (don't ask... it was crappy). I have been to Whistler though. BEAUTIFUL!
Hopefully with three airports around we can fly somewhere - I hate to drive.
These suggestions are fantastic! Thank you all so much!!
"She who must be obeyed" (the wife - and yes I stole that from a British Lawyer show...) is better at finding these trips than I, but I gave her my log in, so she has also seen these suggestions. Hopefully we will be basking after Christmas.

The world is a small place. Sounds really familiar to me. But I would say: "I'm married. I'm used to subordinate myself".
My wife is also better at this. In fact, she really likes to walk through the catalogues, compare, research on the web and finally book. I then happily pay.
