What's the best source/ author of information about best practices with complex data modeling? Are there some standardized data models out there for the stuff common to any business (clients, addresses, etc)?
Thanks,
Sam

Hi Sam;
I'm partial to David Hay's thinking on this matter. He has a good series of articles on his consulting website which address modeling notations and makes some reasoned recommendations: http://www.essentialstrategies.com (see books and articles link).
He has also written a book entitled "Data Model Patterns, Conventions of Thought" which explores a number of common conceptual models.
There is also a 2-volume 'patterns' set by Silverston: "The Data Model Resource Book, Vol. 1: A Library of Universal Data Models for All Enterprises" and "The Data Model Resource Book, Vol. 2: A Library of Data Models for Specific Industries".
A little googling should net you some reviews that compare Hay's and Silverston's books directly.
