Server/Client Network Utility

  • A couple of Questions:

1)What is the difference between the Server Network Utility and Client Network Utility regarding port numbers?

    2) Should they be set to the same?

    3) Which Port number is needed for firewall access?

4)Should there be any reason why I can't change the default port in the Server Network Utility?

    Thanks

  • Server Network utility is for manage server net library, while client is for client. One can just install client to connect to sql server.

Server and client can be configured differently.

Your right may prevent you from changing default port.

  • Just a bit more detail. Server network utility define what network protocols you can use to connect to the SQL Server eg TCP and port 2020.

Client network utilities define what SQL Servers I can connect to via what nework protocoal and alias, eg alias abc-live points to server def,2020 where 2020 is the TCP port.

  • Thanks for the replys.

I had changed the default port in the past, but it wouldn't let me the other day.  When I would Restart the SQL Sevice Mgr it would go back the previous value.

    Thanks.
