Login failed for user sa

  • I have recently inherited a SQL Server 2000 service and discovered that the password was still blank. I have changed the password and have noticed that the above message is written to the SQL Server logs every minute from startup. Can anyone please shed any light on this. I also changed the audit level to failure so the failed 'sa' login may have been occuring before I set the password but I doubt it. Has anyone any ideas ?

    thanks M.

  • Check the security log in event viewer to see if you can identify where it is coming from.  There is a process somewhere that is trying to log in with sa.  Monitoring software? an application?  Enterprise Manager on a workstation?  See if you can find out if something broke at the same time you changed the password.  I would think that the person who is using the application would be complaining that it quit working.

  • At once a minute, I'd be willing to bet it is Enterprise manager. I believe in the audit log you will also find the name of the workstation that is trying to connect.  When you find it (and if they are supposed to have it) change the registration for that server then go to Tools, Options and increase the polling interval.  HTH.
