Hi,
I have a server with sql2000 enterprise edition installed and I now wish to install Reporting Service but only have standard edition. Until I get the enterprise version can I install RS standard edition and upgrade at a later point?

I had a similar problem when installing RS on my test dev box in my home lab. I'm a MAPS subscriber, and gleefully tried to install the copy of Reporting Services that shipped with my June MAPS update - only to discover that it was the STANDARD edition (my development server, unsurprisingly, runs the DEVELOPER edition of SQL Server). It would have been nice of MS to let me know exactly which version of RS I had been shipped (there was no documentation, install notes or info on the CD itself).
I only discovered that there were differing versions, and that you need the same flavouras the version of SQL 2K you have installed
Short answer to your question is no - there is no physical way that a version different to the version of SQL Server you have installed will be compatible.
