SQL Mail Setup

  • Hi,

I want to enable the SQL Mail support on my sql server 2000, but it does not allow me to do so. It gives me profile error.

The login to my Win2K server and the MAPI profile I am using to start SQL Mail is different. So can anyone help me how to configure the same.

  • The way that we did it was

    • Set up a domain level account to run MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT.
    • Give the account bare minimum priviledges on the network.
    • Set up an Exchange mailbox for the account.
    • Install MS Outlook on the server (don't flame me on this one).
    • Log on to the server as the account.
    • Configure Outlook (this creates the MAPI profile).
    • Log off and log onto the server as normal.
    • Go into enterprise manager and select the new profile from the drop down box.
    • Set yourself up as an operator and fill in your email address.
    • Click the TEST button on the SQLMail properties box.

I don't know anything about Exchange but our administrator has said that he can restrict what goes in and out of the mailbox used for SQL Server.

He doesn't allow SQL Server to send/receive external emails.

  • Have a read here, I fount it very usefull when setting up sql mail.

  • That was some very useful info guys. I was trying to setup SQL mail myself, but i had completely overlooked the fact that though my SQL Server was not using local system account, it was using the local machine account, hence i was not able to see the profiles which i had configured in my Outlook in SQL Mail Configuration (Ent. Manager).

What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand
