Hello,
I am running Veritas Backup Exec (BE) 9.1 sp1 on a windows2003 std. server
BE database is on a Sql server 2000 with sp3a. the system was running ok until now
But 4 days ago I installed a Hotfix for the Sql server:
SQL2000-KB810185-8.00.0859
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;821334
since then, BE services don't start. I can't start them.
The service "Backup Exec Device & Media Service" freezes starting.
Every time I try, the event viewer shows the error message:
Application with errors: pvlsvr.exe, version:
9.1.4691.15, module with error: dbutil.dll, version 9.1.4691.0, error address
0x00005940.
Can anybody help me?
Any idea on what to do?
Thank you very much
Juan Carlos

1. Contact Veritas. You should have a support agreement with them that covers you.
2. Contact Microsoft. I believe support RE: Service Packs/Hot Fixes is generally free.
3. Have you tried uninstalling the hotfix and see if Veritas is working? Did this work in the staging/test environments prior to production install??
Good Hunting!

There were several issues that showed up in 859 and the current publicly available level is 878 found here
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=838166
Also here is a good location of up to date info on available patches.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm still waiting for an email response from Veritas.
I don't really know how to uninstall the hotfix. Can you help me? How can i do it?
Thanks in advance.

You should be able to either remove it via add/remove programs or you can do a system rollback.

Thank you very much, Antares686.
I updated my sql server to level 878 and the problem was solved. Now BE services run. Thanks for the links. (I hope no new problems arise)
I recommend everybody not to install Hotfix 859. Its has known bugs. I installed it because Reporting Services installation took me to the link to do it...
