What counters would be key in perfmon?

  • I want to watch our server for key items, especially memory management. What counters would be the best ones to watch for? My issue is as follows: We have 6GB of RAM on the server, 4GB for SQL and 2 GB for the OS. Our batch processing appears to be locking pages in memory and not freeing them up when complete. Again, it appears to be because I'm not clear which permon counters would allow me to see what is truly going on. Anybody have any tips?

    • Do you have /3GB in your boot.ini enabled?
    • What is your actual memory settings (max server memory, min server memory)?
    • What is the memory requirement (target server memory, Total server memory counters)?
    • What is the cache hit ratio?
    • Check the overall memory consumption on your server at the OS level

As a start I would check those things first.

BTW 2 GB for the OS seems to me very high

  • I agree with Gabor 2G is high for the OS.  500 M is good enough.  But aside from that check out http://www.sql-server-performance.com/performance_monitor_counters_memory.asp for some ideas on memory counters in Perfmon.
