Hello - could someone assist please re the above error?
I am running 2 instances, in Enterprise Manager both is running fine, but when I open the SQL Server Service Manager and try to select server instance > nothing just blank? In the right corner the Service manager is there but no green running signal?

Try opening the Service Manager and manually typing the server and instance name that you want to connect to.

The SQLServerAgent service for the instance probably isn't running.
You can check two ways.
1. Open the Service Manager, in the Server box, chose the server\instance you want to check and in the Services box, chose SQL Server Agent. The icon wil show if it is running (it will have the green arrow).
2. Right click on MyComputer, select Manage, select Services. Find the SQLServerAgent services and see if they are started.

Thanks for the reply!
When I type the instance name in -- yes then it works, but when I drop down the list of services and servers -- nothing?
It almost look like it starts up but hide the instance from viewing? Could this be? > Although in Enterprise Manager both instances are registered and running -- only on the SQL Server Service Manager it's not showing?

There's this, though I'm not sure how applicable it will be to your setup:
BUG: The SQL Server 2000 Service Manager Utility Does Not List Instances That Have Not Enabled Network Connections
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;814132
Are both instances running on your Windows XP system or is that what you are using as a client?

Hi Stef,
We have exactly the same issue on Win2k SP4 + Sql 2k SP3a. Two instances running on this server, neither is a 'default' instance. When you look in the Service Manager, nothing !, but if you type in the server\instance name then hit refresh services, voila it appears ok. Also connecting on the server or remotely via EM works fine. Just seems to be an issue with the service manager.
Took a look at the Microsoft KB814132 and is just a workaround !, no solution . Anyone know what MS mean by 'if the instance does not support network connections' ???, as far as we know the installs were pretty standard accept not 'default' instances, is something to do with network connections not enabled if it's not a 'default' instance ??
If anyone knows a solution, would love to hear from you.
Regards.
