My NT server has SQL2000. It also had bags of space so I created a dual boot system and installed Win2003 server, installed SQL server2000.
I booted up on the Win2003 server and restored ONLY the master, model and msdb from the NT location. But lo and behold all the other user databases were there too still pointing to the NT location which is fine but I don't understand why.
Should this be expected? or should I restore from the backup. Regards

Probably because both of these systems are NT based and can see the same locations as each other. I am assuming that the drive the SQL was installed on is the same drive (or same drive letter) on each

Also, since you restored master from your NT system, it has the information about your databases in tables like sysdatabases. At this point, if you don't want to see those db's in the W2K system, detach the databases. Don't delete them -- that will delete the files.
