I have been asked to create schema diagrams for our sql database. I have been using Microsoft Visio to create them but this package does not have very nice exporting capabilities.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a software package that is a little more easier to use and much easier to distribute the diagrams once they have been created.
With Visio, you need a visio viewer or you have to import them as objects into word.
Let me know....thanks.

You may want to research Erwin or System Architect. One of them may work for you
Good Hunting!

I don't know what you meant by "distributing" but may i suggest you PRINT the diagram to PDF with adobe pdf writer? If all you want is to document the diagram this is a very universally accepted format
(BTW I am not getting any commision form adobe )

Adobe is fine but I don't have adobe writer.
What I meant by distribute was that I need to send these schemas to our customers and most likely all they have is Microsoft word.
What would be nice if the schema software would export to a nice 8 1/2 by 11 page into word, without having to first create a bitmap then insert the object.
When you do the insert it comes into the page at a small resolution, then when you resize it to fit the page, it distorts the images and text.

We use ERwin and Adobe Standard with Distiller to accomplish what you wish to do. Since you already are using Visio, your cheapest solution is to purchase Adobe Standard and then when you print, you can specify Distiller as your printer in order to write a pdf as mentioned by someone else in this thread. ERwin (CA), PowerDesigner (Sybase), ER Studio (Embarcadero), can be had if your budget allows it. ERwin has a report tool that can put the diagram and other metadata to a word importable document. But writing to a pdf allows you the folks it is sent to print/plot to various printers/plotters and vary the size of the output easier. It's been our experience that when you use ERwin's report tool you cannot vary the size of the diagram.
Regards!
