Greater than 8gigs of memory on windows 2003?

  • I noticed that windows 2003 enterprise can now address memory up to 32 gigs instead of the 8 gigs with 2000. Does this mean that sql server 2000 32bit enterprise can also now access 32 gigs when running on windows 2003 enterprise?

    Thanks.

  • Yes or No. SQL Server 2000 32bit edition can address only 4Gb memory for its process but it can use more than 4GB with AWE enabled. The memory beyond 4GB is just like very fast disk to SQL Server itself.

SQL Server 2000 (64-bit) is able to directly address the maximum memory supported by Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (currently 512 GB).
