Is there any way to rename SQL Server 2000 instance name without re-installing it?

DavidB, this won't actually rename the instance will it? What about the registry keys, etc. which are still listed under the old name. Does it matter?

This only changes the names internally. It does not rename the instance so far as the Listener service is concerned (or so far as the OS is concerned). While it's most likely possible, it is a pretty big mess when you consider all the things that have to be changed... file location being the easiest. Registry in several places (including under services) being potentially the worst. Microsoft's official stance is you can't do it without the uninstall/reinstall.

Using techniques we use to move database servers, you could probably accomplish the same thing with minimum fuss. Check the articles by Andy Warren... he has some on how to move databases easily.
