I'm in the planning phase of setting up monitoring and alert resources using Tivoli and MON software. This is the first time I work with these softwares so I were wondering what resources/counter should I be setting up monitoring to alert me and why? We have some SQL7/2K and some Clusters, one thing I definitely would be monitoring is when the SQL services fail/stop. This is one of the alert but I would like to know any other important one. And if there are resources online I can look at. Any advice and input would be of great help. Thanks in advance...

Monitor the service for up and down. I wouldn't monitor other items (CPU, disk wait, etc) unless you can set a limit of of like 3 failures over 15 or 20 minutes. The reason is that there will be spikes here and you don't want to get an alert on every spike (disk space might be an exception), but if your CPU is > 80% for 20 minutes, then you might want to know. Again, not sure you'd do anythign.
Deadlocks are nice to watch for as a re blocks that last.
