Backups failed

  • Hi

Yesterday couple of my database backups failed with the following message:

Time-out occurred while waiting for buffer latch type 4 for page (2:0), database ID 13. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 845) BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3013). The step failed.

Microsoft tech note talks about an AWE setting which may cause this. But I DONT

    have any AWE setting...

Any one could help me out finding the source of this error please....

  • We have also run into this same (well, very similar) error message on our servers not when doing backup but when server was stressed. What the SQL Server is telling you is that the disk I/O system is not able to keep up with SQL Server. Almost always, this message means that you have a driver or hardware problem with your I/O system, and you need to identify the problem and fix it. This error can occur anytime SQL Server is generating a lot of I/O activity.

It could mean an outdated driver or firmware with your Disk Array or SAN. Let you Network Admin check the Disk counters and also check the Controllers.

Let me know if you need more information.

    Good Luck

  • I have asked my network admin folks and SAN support team - they say everything is fine. There was no other activity on that system other than these backups. And this happens irregularly (once a month or so)
