I was wondering if anyone can tell me how MSDE 2000 gets installed? We have discovered 100's of desktop instances of MSDE 2000 on our small Network and don't know exactly how far we need to go to manage these (ie,passwords, upgrades, SP's). Does anyone know how MSDE 2000 gets distributed??

It can come from Vendor's applications, Microsoft Office 2000 etc.
You can use Microsoft tools to scan all you MSDE 2000 instances.

The SQL Retina Scanner is actually significantly faster, since it's multi-threaded. Also, it's GUI based.

Thanks for all the help and ideas. We have used the MS tools for scanning but I am going to look at the SQL Retina Scanner also. I was really more intersting in HOW MSDE 2000 got installed in the first place.

I'm told a lot of the finacial software packages install MSDE, ScottTrade, Ameritrade, Foliofn, TDWaterhouse maybe Quicken.

Another question related to this topic.... How does does MS SQL Server build 7.00.623 (MSDE) get installed? Is it similar to MSDE 2000 in that it gets installed as part of another package?
February 12, 2003 at 1:05 pm
Yes. It can be installed separately or as part of another installation. Thankfully, it and the rest of the SQL Server 7 versions aren't vulnerable to SQL Slammer.

But if you have MCDE 2000 installed with another application you can install SQL2000 named instance only, or uninstall application with MSDE and install SQL2000 first.
