Depends on what you call mastering. I'd suggest you be pretty darn comfortable with TSQL before taking the exam - along with all the other things MS lists as exam objectives, including XML.
The only site is use is rapidassess.com, about $59 for 10 uses of their practice questons. Other than that I use MSDN/Technet, but no exam targeting sites.
Sybex usually writes a good prep book. I usually combine that with ExamCram and the course objectives plus a good deal of hands on time.
I took the beta in Feb - if you study the objectives, it's doable. Nothing wild.

BTW, I can't comment on the Sybex book because I co-wrote it and haven't used any other books. I did think this exam was easier than the 7.0 exam.

You need to know quite a bit of T-SQL for the exam. Not sure how much is deviant from SQL-92, but there are many questions dealing with T-SQL.

YES! IMO, this exam is really more concerned about whether or not you are awake than if you know SQL Server. There are several questions that I considered "trick" questions. Simple if you read the question and the answers closely but very subtle differences that made it seem 2 answers were right.
This problem has been fixed in the 229 exam and your knowledge is test now more than your alertness.
