What modifications are made to system databases during SQL Cluster Install

  • Greetings all,

I have been researching whether or not grant/revoke permissions previously applied to system database objects get reset to a "default" setting during an SQL 2005 cluster upgrade?

Does any one know if system databases completely replaced or only modified during upgrade?

Appreciate anyone with granular install knowledge or hands on experience with this.

    Cheers!

  • From what I remember, the cluster install should affect any of that. On the other hand, the best way to be sure is to back up all your system databases (except TempDB) and restore them to the cluster once the upgrade is done.

You will have to go back into Surface Area Configurations & Configuration tools to reset everything there, though. ... At least, I believe you will. I don't think I've ever seen a cluster upgrade where you could just add an existing SQL Server box to the cluster. Everything we've done, we've had to move databases from the stand alone to the cluster instance because of instance naming issues.
