We need to start developing in 2008 yet need to be able to maintain our 2005 stuff. Is it possible to install SQL 2005 and 2008 and be able to use BIDS for either or?

Are you talking about installing two copies of BIDS on the same computer, one from each version? If so, yes, that's possible.

I have BIDS for both 2005 / 2008 installed, and working fine.
However, I do NOT have both SSMS 2005/2008 installed - I was having issues when one would patch, it would break the other. So I have just SSMS 2008 installed. Just be aware that in 2008, some things are not compatible (for example, some of the maintenance plan actions have been updated).

At my previous project, I had BIDS 2005/08 installed and SSMS 2005/08 installed.
SSMS 2005 is still useful as you can only connect to Integration Services 2005 with SSMS 2005.
Need an answer? No, you need a question

Sorry to hijack this thread but I'd like to extend the same line of questions if I may - Right now I have SQL Server 2000\Visual Studio 2003 for supporting apps for one client, SQL 2005\VStudio 2005 for another client and things have been working OK... but now I have another client using SQL2008\VS2008 which I do not have yet - does anyone know if there are issues with throwing with all three versions in the mix?
Thanks much!

If there are, virtual PCs are probably the answer.
