SQL 2005 Std Cluster Issue

  • Hi,

    I'm looking for a bit of assistance as I'm a bit stuck with a multiple instance cluster. The base O/S is W2K3 R2 Enterprise Edition, and I'm using SQL 2005 Standard Edition (9.0.4035) in a two node active/passive configuration. Now, I've already got two instances running on the cluster and have been for a few months. I'm now trying to add and 3rd instance but the installation keeps erroring when installing SQL Server Database Services. The log file is showing the below error;

    MSI (s) (98:10) [13:27:17:757]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - Update 'Hotfix 3024 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 ENU (KB000000)' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files\SQLSetup0031_VWWSQLP03P1_SQL.log.

    MSI (s) (98:10) [13:27:17:757]: Note: 1: 1708

    MSI (s) (98:10) [13:27:17:757]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -- Installation failed.

    I have seen a similar thread to this but there was not a solution, does anybody have any ideas? Let me know if you need any additional information.

    Thanks in advance

    Darren

  • 2005 std only supports 2 nodes only.

  • Ron, Thanks for your reply but I'm not trying to add a new node into the configuration, I'm trying to add an additional instance, which the limit for 2005 Std can be up to 50+ instances.

  • ...and the 3rd instance has it's own resources?

    Are you installing from the node that the new cluster group is currently running on?

    Are you logged in to the server, or is this a remote install?

    This white paper might help.
