How Are Your Backups ?

  • We needed to restore one of our production databases to a point in time just before a corruption occured. We're fortunate that it was properly backed up with all the T-Logs available.

I just thought I'd post this as a reminder to double check your backups. You don't want to be the one posting a "How do I recover my DB with no backup ?" type post we see here from time to time.

  • As a DBA if you don't have backups then it's time to usp_updateresume :hehe: We have SCOM alert and SQL alerts for monitoring jobs.

Of course, what good is a backup if you don't test them periodically. Luckily, for our LOB apps, we do get the opportunity to test periodically. Our SIS system is actually tested nightly, and the HR and Finance systems have periodic restores to test/dev/training that they are tested regularly as well.

  • Most of the time 99% time backup files are not corrupt, We do test them randomly. It is pain to test each and every backup file daily after backups.

It's that 1% that will bite you. I have an automated process in place for the SIS system and would like to put together an automated process for the HR and Finance systems, just not sure how that one needs to be done yet.
