SP3

  • I have been reading through the release notes for SP3.

Upgrading from SQL Server 2005 SP2 Cumulative Update 10 or Cumulative Update 11

SQL Server 2005 SP3 contains the hotfixes that were included in cumulative update packages 1 through 9 for SQL Server 2005 SP2. If you are upgrading from SQL Server 2005 SP2 Cumulative Update 10 or Cumulative Update 11, you must apply a post-SP3 cumulative update after you upgrade to SP3 to obtain all the hotfixes. To obtain the cumulative update, see the article Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

I am unsure what the current Cumulative Update Package is?

    Here is my version info:

    Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3233.00 (X64) Mar 6 2008 21:58:47 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

Windows Update is also advising download of security update for SQL Server 2005 SP2 (KB960090).

I am a little nervous upgrading so would appreciate somw advice from those that have.

    Regards,

    Phil.

Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, 'I think I've lost an electron.' The other says 'Are you sure?' The first says, 'Yes, I'm positive... '

  • Hi Phil,

Not really sure I should answer considering you support Liverpool!! 😀

I've added a link which will be of use to you.

    http://www.sqlsecurity.com/FAQs/SQLServerVersionDatabase/tabid/63/Default.aspx

    Cheers

  • Ha! Ha! Thanks for the link.

We have just signed 2 new players that should slot in nicely, a Japanese lad and an Italian.

    Nick-a-motor and Rob-A-Telly.....

Back to the link. Looks like I am only at SP2 with a hotfix. Could I upgrade to SP3 from my current position? I do not want to be left exposed to security vulnerabilities (not public facing, behind a firewall) but do not want to update and introduce issues unnecessarily.

Any thoughts on rolling out updates?

    Thanks,

    Phil.

  • A service pack includes all previous cumulative updates. At any time after RTM you can upgrade to SP3.

We maintain a build list here as well: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Administration/2960/

The CUs are not tested completely, as in not regression tested, so unless you are applying one to handle a specific issue, I wouldn't apply these. Stick with the SPs.

  • Hi Phil ,

How you checked the service pack details i hope you used select @@version which gives only windows service pack.

Run select serverproperty('productlevel') which gives SQL Server Service pack Info.

  • Thanks guys.

    I used SELECT @@VERSION originally.

    select serverproperty('productlevel') returns 'SP2'.

So stick with the service packs then. I can apply to a test instance and see if anything breaks.

    Many Thanks,

    Phil.
