Trying to creating linked server from sql 2000 to sql 2008 -- not working!

    I am trying to create a linked server from a sql2000 SP3 (32bit) instance to a sql 2008 SP1 (64bit) but I am having NO success. I am continually getting the error "Error 17: SQL Server does not exist or access denied". I have tried several different combinations to get this link to work but to no avail. What am I missing????
