"Execute Task" Disappearing Act

  • I'm doing some basic SSIS packages (export to excel, e-mail notifications, migrating Jobs to test Databases) and I'm running into a problem w/ package maintenance. After I create the DTSX file and move it over to the destination server, I can execute the file and run it in a job without a problem. However, if I try to open the file up in BIDS, I can no longer edit the file or execute individual steps (i.e. the "Execute Task" option in the contextual menu no longer appears). It seems to me to be a permissions issue, but another member of my team is in the same group as I and he does not have this problem.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  • Are you opening the dtsx file in bids or in a solution in bids?

Right clicking on the file and opening in bids will not allow you to run anything (The green button is also grayed out)

  • It doesn't seem to matter. I create a new solution and open the file up there, and the Execute Task still doesn't show up. However, if I create a new file inside the solution, and throw in a Task, the Execute Task makes an appearance.

  • ok, so you have new solution and drop the file there and cannot use it.

If you, from solution explorer, copy and past the file, what happens?

  • Genius. If I use the Solution Explorer and "Add Existing Package", "Execute Task" shows up and I can edit the file. Thanks.

  • Yup. That's what I was trying to say earlier. It seems pointless though that a packages HAS to be in a solution to work. But, it does.... Ho hum.

    Glad you got it working.
