IA64 SQL management console crashing

  • running a test itanium Windows 2003 server for a IA64 SQL enterprise.  Have the hardware built, OS installed, SQL installed.  When I perform any function in the console that uses the query interface, the console closes.  No errors logged in the event viewers.  Have tried reloading 2.0 .Net framework.  installing SP2 and the hotfix for SP2.  found a reference for the permissions on some registry keys, these were set correctly.

    anyone seen this before?

  • I have the same problem with the IA64 . I believe the console runs on in the 32 bit mode (WOW) which is what I think is causing the problem, We are going to open a ticket with MS in the near future.

  • IA64 don't have support to run the management tools on the server. You can get osql to run but that's about it. Connect remotely from a x86 pc/server and perform your console tasks.

  • I have 5 IA64 servers

    2x Passive cluster SSAS

    2x Passive cluster SQL 2k5

    1x dev

The clusters are 2x Dual Core Itanium2, and the dev is 2x single Core Itanium.

The SSMS runs on all of the machines.

The tools that don't are Visual Studio based tools. These are not ported to IA64 and don't install/run on the platform at all.

SSMS should run if all is well with the O/S build, SQL install. Check for windows hotfixes...it may be a Montecito issue with the Dual core itanium. I know our Oracle drivers worked on Dev and not on the clusters because of the dual core - needed a patch.

    HTH's

Edit: The problem (benefit) with the Itanium2 is that is doesn't have hardware support for IA32. For discussions with MS, HP, Oracle it runs 32 bit applications using software emulation. To be avoided if at all possible.
