Hello,
I’ve just installed MSSQL 2005 and have realised the default data and log files for the system databases have been created in ‘C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data’. This maybe a stupid question, but could someone please tell me where I select this area during an install. Thanks for your help.
P.S. I did uninstall and reinstall to try to try to find out myself, but I failed!! Changing the “Installation Path” on the “Feature Selection” screen did not help.

I can not help you with the part about where to change the setting during installation, but you can change it after installation. In SQL Server Management server, Object Explorer, connect to the new server, then right click on the server name, select properties. In the properties windows choose the "Database Settings" page and under the "Database default locations" set them to where you want.

Thanks JLK, no quite what I was after. You're correct in that the default directories can be set here for subsequent DB creates. But my biggest concern was the build of system databases on a drive that you may not want them to be on. Thanks for your help though.

Sorry, I didn't think about the system databases when I was reading your post. As I recall there was an "advanced" option for several of the different components when doing a "Custom" installation. If I get a chance I'll see if I can find exactly where those options were. I think you can specify the location for the system databases there.
I guess you could at a minimum move the system databases after installation.

I believe that some SQL Server editions do not provide the custom installation window to change the database path at installation. If available, it should be under the Feature Selection dialog, Database Engine data files (not to be confused with Database Engine server components). If not available, the data files will be installed under the directory for the Database Engine server components, in a subfolder called Data.
I am sure that Developer edition does not offer the option, and that Enterprise and Standard editions do. But am not sure on other editions.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Mark, I'm installing the Standard edition version. Frustrating if that is the case, thanks for your help.
