Extremely grateful for any help. I am trying to create a simple MaintPlan to back up a complete DB using the MaintWizard but is failing and I get the message below.
Also the version installed is Sql 2k5 9.00.1399.06 (RTM). do I have to fully patch up SP2 in order to get this working?
Create maintenance plan failed
Create failed for jobstep 'Subplan'. [Microsoft SqlServer.MaintenancePlan Tasks]
An Exception occurred while executing a transact-SQL statement or batch.
[Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo]
The specified '@subsystem' is invalid [valid values are returned by sp_enum_sqlagent_subsystems]. [Microsoft SQL Server. Error 14234]
Thanks in advance

As you have mentioned you are in RTM version, I would suggest it will be better if you apply SP2.

Applying SP2 and installing the Integration Services did the trick. Thanks all

Also view and install from KB934458 at the very minimum for running maintenance plans. This should bring you up to 9.00.3054.

Lot of Bugs has been fixed in SP1 and SP2. Just check microsoft site for that they have listed number of bugs being fixed in SSIS and MP.

First you need to install sp1 followed by sp2 in order to full upgrade of binary files.

How do I sort this error

I don't believe you need to install SP1 first. From the Microsoft website:
"Service Pack 2 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is now available. SQL Server 2005 service packs are cumulative, and this service pack upgrades all service levels of SQL Server 2005 to SP2."
