Back-up Mtnc Plan

  • Just upgraded from sql2000 to sql2005 sp1.  Migrated my maintenance plans.  But, read in the MS Upgrade Technical Resource Guide that SQL2005 will not delete old backups from subdirectories.  So, after the migration, I removed the checkbox indicating to create subdirectories on both the database and the transaction log backups.  Now I  have some weirdness going on:

In the root backup directory, for all database backups I have something similar to:

    dbname_backup_200607270430.BAK 2139kb 7/26/2006 4:30am

    dbname_backup_200607270445.TRN 24kb 7/26/2006 4:45am

But in the subfolder, I have:

    dbname_db_200607270430.BAK 2139kb 7/26/2006 4:30am

    dbname_tlog_200607270445.TRN 24 kb  7/26/2006 4:45am

Can anyone clear up the confusion?  Many thanks,

    Janet

  • Janet,

I don't know why there are two backups made in your case, probably some leftovers from the migration. But about what you read " MS Upgrade Technical Resource Guide that SQL2005 will not delete old backups from subdirectories. ", this has been fixed in SP1. So if you could actually use subdirectories.

  • Well, thank you Markus!  We'll just go back to the subdirectories then.  The examples given are weird, though, aren't they?  They are the same size, with BAK and TRN extensions, but different filenames.  And, the examples were not the day of the conversion, they were the next day/night.
