here is a licensing question for you fellow DBAs.
when you get a licensed copy for the server 2000, on how many client machines can the client be installed? Not clear how this works...
Thank you,
Ben

The client may be installed on anywhere that is licensed to access SQL Server, either because:
1. the SQL Server was licensed with the per-processor model
- or -
2. The SQL Server has a Server license, and either:
a) the user that will use the client machine to access the server has a user CAL
- or -
b) a machine CAL has been purchased for that client machine.
- or -
3. A Developer Edition license has been purchased for use on that client.
Basically, there are no special or additional licensing requirements for the client tools (QA, EM, etc.), you just need to have aquired the right to access the server from that installation through one of the means listed above.

If your connections are from AD authenticated machines/users, i.e. employees, you need a CAL for each user that accesses the machine. Usually when you purchase SQL Server, you get a certain # of CALs.
The other alternative is to license per server and have CALs for each concurrent connection. This works well if you have relatively few people in the company accessing SQL Server.
