Cannot backup named instance

  • I have serveral instances installed on the sql server. I can backup the default instance using a maintenance plan. Cannot backup the named instance using a maintenance plan created on that instance. No errors, just does not backup at 2am.

  • We had some similar problems. It was a long time ago, but i know it had to do with the owner of the backup jobs. Has the owner permissions on de backup directory? Is the owner of the default instance different?

  • What OS and SP are you running ? What version of SQL and SP are you running ? Have the maintenance plans ever functioned correctly on the instance in question ? Are all of the instances 'full' SQL instances or is it a mix of 'full' and MSDE ?

  • We are using sqlserver 2000 no sp. I will search for lastest sp and install it. The permissions appear to be the same for the default and named instances. The named instance maintenance plans have never worked. I can backup the database using enterprise manager manually.

  • If you backup manually, you have not the same permissions as when you backup using a job. When you are doing a backup using a job, the user of sql server agent is the one that counts.

  • What account(s) are running the SQL Server Service and the SQL Agent Service ? Are they LocalSystem ? Local COMputer accounts ? Domain User Accounts ?

Where is you backup target ? What computer/drive/directory ?

  • I experienced the same problem and I just resolved it.  I performed a minimum install of one of my instances and I could not perform any of my jobs that were created via the maintenance wizard.  I then started comparing this instance to one that had the typical install and found that there were a few files that were missing.  The one that corrects this issue is located in the BINN\Resources\1033 directory.  The file name is "SQLMAINT.RLL"

I copied this file from the instance that had the complete install and this corrected my problem.

    I hope this helps you...

    Thanks
