We are debating that we should buy a 4 way server or 8 way server for the bets of the money worth. Here is my question, if turned on HT on my 4 ways server, the OS 'sees' 8 processors. What the advantage I buy an 8-way server. Can I turn HT on the 8-way and get even more horses on the EE edition (with max.of 8-cpu) ?

But there are ONLY 4 procs there.
So if you need 8 proc processing power then you have to put 8 proc into your server. if less power is enough then by just 4 procs and turn the HT on.
By turning HT on you can experience some performance improvement but definitly not the double of a real processor.

I agree with nyulg here. Intel itself says the performance gain isn't the same as a second physical processor. Their benchmarks show about a 30% increase on some server apps. You can read more here:
