I'm dealing with SS version 9.0.1399 -sa
While testing out a maintenance plan I created, I scrolled down to JOBS and executed the job by clicking 'start job at step' and the job fails at step one. I get "the job failed. the job was invoked by user sa".
Now just by chance I ran into a site that said to right click the job >> properties >> steps >> edit >> and in the package location path at the bottom insert a \ in front of the path.
This did fix the issue but I am wondering what is going on here? Do i need to install a patch?

you are on the RTM version of SQL2005 which is somewhat out of date. SP4 is out now so you should roll that out(after testing first)

Thanks. Have you heard of this issue before? I imagine it has something to do with RTM.

there were loads of issues with jobs in early releases of SQL2005, this was likely one of them.
you should patch your SQL instance for this reason and more importantly you will be missing security patches and be out of support.

Ok thanks guys! Unfortunately I think we have several other servers running the same version. I let our system admins know about it to see how they want to move.

Without SP2 (at a minimum) you will not be able to use the backup cleanup task in Maintenance Plans.
