Maintanance Plans output txt logs

  • Hi

The output txt files that are created in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG

after each job has run is pretty limited in the information displayed.

Is there a way to turn on extra logging information telling you what the job has actually done instead of just saying the job name and the time it took to run.

    Thanks in advance

  • If you add an output file to the job step, that would contain more information regarding the job execution.

  • Yes, you can turn off those text files. In the maintenance plan, there is a button next to the Manage Connections button where you can configure reporting.

In that dialog - just turn it off. As you have found out, those reports are rather useless.

As to the other recommendation about adding output to the job step - I wouldn't bother unless you are having issues with the agent job itself.

Just note that maintenance plans log error messages in the sysdtslog90 table in msdb. You can view those messages by accessing the history for the maintenance plan or writing your own query. There is nothing logged here for successful completion though.
