log file size

  • we have 2 databases which are in simple and full recovery , backups are done every night . but no log backup is happening . those dbs are in 10 and 43 GB of sizes . now we have to estimate the disk space to schedule the log backups .

HOw to find the amount of disk space required to configure log backups of the databases .

  • It is difficult to estimate how much space is needed for Log back ups by just knowing the DB size. It all depends on how much activity you have in your DB.

Therefore, my advice would be for you to monitor how much data activity is done on these DBs and then based on that you can make an estimate.

  • how u can take the log backups wen hte recovery mode is simple??? I cant get tht

Moreover for full recovery, it all depends upon the changes on the db and also the frequency of the

log backups u will be taking.

  • thanks for ur replies ,

we will chnage the db to full.the full backup sizes are 9 and 42 GB .

we want to schedule the log backup for every one hour of the databases.

  • If these are important databases, I would suggest t-log backups more frequently than every hour. Consider the recent thread yesterday of the person who's database failed, so they lost 40 minutes of activity because they only backup every hour. But if 1 hour data loss is ok, then go with that.
