Been looking again at the certification and I think this has now changed so that to get MCSA I need
70-461,2,3
Then I can go for trying for the 466,467 to get MCSE
462 and 463 seem to be more of a DBA focus and while I am going to enjoy the challenge it is going to be a real challenge for me.
The MS training kit books on Amazon are not due out till June / July and no e-learning yet.
Any suggestions for a good basic book that would help me get a good grounding before the courses and books become available. I have been involved in supporting SQL Server but would never ever think of saying I could do any DBA task.
Idiots guide woulod be good to get me going. Tried the 2008 training kit for MCTS DBA and it had me in tears within minutes
Cheers

463 is not what I'd call DBA focused. It's SSIS, MDS and DQS.

Books Online? Though if you've never done any DBA work, you are going to struggle greatly with 462. It's not at a level where a casual familiarity with DBA tasks is adequate.

OK, will re read the spec for that exam

I think that while this is a good idea to wrap some DBA stuff into the Cert this is where a few of us will come unstuck. Thats where I am going to need some help with basic intros and stuff.

Grab a 2008 Administrator's guide. no it's not 2012, but most of the principals are the same and then you can just swot up on the new stuff.
463 is going to be my bane. I don't do SSIS much, I don't do MDS or DQS at all, and yet I need that for any cert above.

I'm working through my 2008 R2 books until the 2012 material emerges. Most of the books listed on Amazon are out August I think.

I was starting to prep myself for the 2008 developer certifications, i wanted to avoid any DBA type stuff if i could. now i'd be really concerned looking at the cert path required in 2012. so i'm dreading the thoughts of it myself.

When I looked again it really is going to be hard for some of us 'Just BI' people to get through the certification. However I am sure that will cut down the number of certified people and make this more valuable.
If you are doing data warehouse / SSIS / data marts then a good geounding is required in DBA skill set to get the most out of your work. I have no intention of working as a DBA but if I can learn the esential important bits then that makes me a better developer.
I recently was asked to spec a box from top to bottom for a data warehouse. I have done this before but I am sure that I would do a better job and understand more if I had DBA type skills.
Its going to be challenging but worth it

Same for 'just dev' or 'just admin' on the data platform one.

That or increase the desire to cheat. :-/

Study guides are not out and neither the test engines or the dumps, if you mean.

This is cleaver marketing, they are not actually asking for the test engines, they just want the foot fall on their websites.
You mention dumps, you are aware that this breaks the NDA and can result in all your certifications being revoked and not being able to ever take a certification exam again?

Yes I know, so the original poster should also know who mentions about test engines.

I have no interest in dumps or test engines. Just books and. Training material. Just par for the course these get mentioned. Currently pitting this on hold as I am taking another 2008 cert in july. Once that is done, hopefully books and material will be available.

Just reading about the upgrade paths, it seems to me that if you are new, you take two exams and get the MCSE:Data Platform, but if you are upgrading you have to pass Three exams to get the same thing. Surely I am misunderstanding the situation?

You need to get MCSA which involves 3 exams before you can get MCSE, so the total is 5 exams if you are a newbie to certs.
