BI Solutions

  • Are there any pros or cons to putting all projects (SSAS, SSIS, SSRS) in one solution? There are about 30 projects.

  • Why are you asking?

  • Another person in the department insists that all the projects (SSAS, SSIS, SSRS) should be stored in one solution. The projects don't neccesarily relate to each other, they are just all on the same server. Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with that and are there any pros or cons.

I guess the only possible con is that it may take a long time to load in BIDS...if you have 30 projects. Breaking it up into smaller pieces may make it more manageable.

I usually like putting all of it in one solution, as it makes it easier to work on the different projects without opening another solution. But then again, I don't have 30 projects in my solutions...

  • The only point I can bring on the table is that it's really annoying to load all those projects on startup. I have a "small" solutions with 200 reports over 10-15 solutions and it takes 1 minute to open Bids.

What are your pros and cons? Maybe it'll give us more ideas.

  • Multiple people are working on the different projects and switching back and forth between production and deployment. It looks like an all eggs in one basket to me.

  • It looks like no source & change management control to me :-).

    That'd be the real issue!

  • If the projects relate to each other then i think its good to put them in the same solution, for example SSIS/SSAS/SSRS projects all relating to one BI solution.

but for projects that are in no way related then I see little point in combining them.

  • Typically, the anchor and common denominator of the solution that contains these types of projects is the database project. It was not mentioned but I assume it would be there.

    what he said.

I, personally, would push back to "the insistor" and have them justify why everything *should* be in one solution. more cons than pros, imo.

I only have a handful of projects, all related, and BIDS still gets bogged down. I simply cannot have my dev environment slower than it already is.
