Many companies are legally required to keep it around. You can archive it, and that helps your daily online system a bit, but in many companies like mine for example, data just can't be simply removed anymore. Even decommisioned databases have to kept on file(.BAK) for at least 1-3 years (depending on content) at my shop. 😀

Very true.
LOTS of regulations about data retention. Some silly, but a few do make sense.
