SSAS Training Course Recommendations

  • Hi All,

My first time over here from the SSIS forum 🙂 My company has agreed to pay for a course in SSAS so I can complete the MSBI toolkit set.

I'm an experienced developer in SSIS having used it for the past 5 years in my ETL role. I'm part client facing and have academic if not industry experience in the concepts and theory of business intelligence, essentially BI is where I see my career going.

I was wandering if anyone would recommend an SSAS course number for someone proficient in SQL, SSIS, SSRS who has not had any hands on experience with the SSAS specific tools.

My aim is to have the ability to design and develop the cubes as well as create the dashboards and have the ability to query them effectively.

I have a good head for theory as well as coming from a techie developer background so am not after anything too basic, just bear in mind that as far as SSAS goes, so far Its all been book reading.

In a few years I want to be able to market myself as a BI professional rather than an ETL developer.

    Cheers people.

    Chris

  • The Microsoft course teaches you only how to use the SSAS tool rather than why you should or shouldn't do something or cube design.

  • I took a three-day remote instructor-led course from New Horizons and thought it was pretty good:

  • Cheers guys,

So far the wiseowl 3 day course http://www.wiseowl.co.uk/courses/ssas-cube-analysis-services.htm appears the most likely candidate.

When looking at the M6234 Implementing and Maintaining Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services course it does indeed to be more geared up for a developer being hand fed specifications which is not what I'm after so thanks for the heads up.

I much prefer the look of a ground up course (cube design etc) as the techie implementation stuff will improve with practice and is easier to get help on from forums etc.

Fingers crossed my employer will make good on this.

  • Go to Amazon and get MCTS Exam 70_448. It comes with a companion CD and pretty good lessons. It's not to indepth but will get you started with all the basic concepts. It goes over SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. If you are solid in SSIS, you can just skip those chapters. It's self paced and only about 40 bucks. The Pragmatic Works looks like good stuff also but (much) more $$$. Course if company pays for...

  • Pragmatic works has free webinars every month. I usually find one or two of interest. FREE FREE FREE!!!
