Passive cluster node crashed

  • Hi,

We have 2 node active/passive cluster setup for SQL Server 2005 EE x64 with SP3 on Windows Server 2003 x64 with SP2

    SQL1 - Active

    SQL2 - Passive

Assuming the passive node SQL2 has crashed completely and we cannot make it work.

Now we want follow the below steps and test scenario:

1.Dis join the passive node SQL2 from the cluster

2.Build new server with same name SQL2 and install fresh Windows 2003 Server x64 EE with SP2 and make it cluster aware

3.On node1 SQL1, from Cluster Administrator, go to File->New->Node . Here add the new passive node SQL2

Are the above steps makes sense?

Please provide some links and documents how to achieve this scenario?

    Many thanks

  • Hi,

I went through the below link to add the newly build passive node and I want to have the steps to add the new node 2 the existing active node.

    http://www.microsoftnow.com/2008/09/adding-node-on-sql-2005-cluster.html

Do we need to install SQL Server binaries or the full SQL Server 2005 installation & SP3?

Or after adding the new node and once we failover to the new passive node, the binaries will get created automatically? How does this work exactly?

I appreciate your help on providing step by step process

    Thanks

  • Since the SQL Server Binaries etc are not on shared disk, you will need to install SQL 2005 and SP3 on the 2nd node. But you would be doing this via the Add A Node to the Cluster process.

It would be better if you had system backups to rebuild the server and restore the System state, registry etc from these backups.

You do have system backups don't you?

    Cheers

Nothing in life is ever so complicated that with a little work it can't be made more complicated.

  • What are the steps to perform before disjoin the passive node from cluster?
