i just googled "free system monitoring software" and found lots of stuff;
you want to watch for more than just the SQL server service being up or down; you've also got to see if there is a network issue, or even if the whole server is offline/down.

It's not free but I love Idera's Diagnostic Manager. It'll do what you want and more. You also might want to take a look at Red Gate's SQL Alert. It's focused on exactly what you're looking for.

I don't need to see if my SQL Server service is down...
what i need to know is if the server it self is down

In that case, you don't want something installed on the database servers, as it'll be kinda hard for a program installed on a server to notify you that the server it is installed on is down.
You need a centralised diagnostic server. Get demos of the ones that people have mentioned in this thread and try them out.

It depends on the product. Some yes, some no. Search them online, you can find out what features they have that way.

I've used Servers Alive and What's Up gold for this. They both work. Not free, but they work.
Note that it's likely worth paying a little for something if you want to ensure it's up.

Both of the ones I mentioned work with either. After all, it's nothing to send an email to a phone, just like to an email address.

Check out: "The Dude"
No not the Big Lebowski...the monitor software: http://www.mikrotik.com/thedude.php
It is free. We use it. Like the others said...you wouldn't install it on the SQL server itself, you'd have a dedicated workstation to run it on.
