Disaster Recovery solutions: Microsoft versus 3rd party

  • For those of you that have disaster recovery / BCP ( business continuity plans ) in place, are you using the "free" tools that come with sql server like log shipping/mirroring/replication, or some other tool that does things like snap the data from one SAN-type device to another one at a remote server location?

Except for hot standby hardware costs and DBA-overhead, the sql tools are free. I don't know if the expensive hardware/snap type solutions are just more robust, or if Systems types don't understand the built-in ones and don't want to have to rely on DBAs.

  • SQL Server Native DR tools are pretty robust and reliable. However, 3rd party tools are dedicated tools just for the purpose of the DR, which may provide you with some additional functionalities. Tools like SAN based Async\sync replicxation can also be used if your environment permits and if budget is available. It all depends on your SLAs, budgetary constraints and the business requirements.

    Thank You,

    Best Regards,

  • I think we got approval for about $150k. One advantage of having a DR site is doing your backups on that instead of on the production databases.
