Added more tempdb files. Restart needed or are they immediately active?

  I added a new tempdb file to match my processor count. Is a service restart typically needed to make this change take effect? If not, how can I tell if each one is currently active and being used?

  I'm pretty sure you can add files on-the-flly but not remove them
