Hi All,
Am very new to SQL Server Clusttering ?? I have less knowledge in this area nor i got any chance to work on it which involves
resources , resource groups , storage (SAN) etc....
If am a fresher / or a new comer to SQL Admin area what questions can be asked to test the knowlege on sql clusttering??
Is that mandatory to have hands on experience on what is sql clusttering and failover happens in sql clusttering??
Recently, i have attended some interviews and am able to answer to types and some concepts on clusttering. I don't exactly know what they
are expecting from the a Jr.DBA on this regard???
Can anyone share there thoughts on this ?
Thanks in Advance.

all of these can be reproduced in virtual environments for test\educational purposes! I have a tech article that details how to do this if you need it

clustering isnt necessarily mandatory, some organisations do not haveeed this technology. Depends on the requirements

Interview techniques are a law unto themselves. It depends on the knowledge of the person interviewing you firstly. If they have clustering they would surely expect you to at least understand things like
resource dependenices,
adding or removing resources
failing over groups
configuring quorum
preventing or allowing failback, etc

I think it would be great if you would post it. Others following this thread will probably find it useful.

Hi Perry,
Can you provide the tech article what you have mentioned.
It would be great help for everyone.
Thanks π

Hi
the documents are fairly large but here they are
Installing Clustered SQL Server 2008 using VMWare Server2
Installing Clustered SQL Server 2005 using VMWare Server2
They allow you to create a ringfenced SQL Server cluster installation which you may use to your hearts content without fear of breaking anything (apart from the virtual installation) π

I suggest you get Perry's documents, they look very comprehensive.
If you want to install using Hyper-V then Google can help you find documents on how to set up a Hyper-V cluster, and then follow Perry's document on setting up SQL Server.
If you are not familiar with installing Windows and SQL Server in non-clustered mode then you will have a great deal to learn in order to get a clustered installation working, expect this learning to take many days to complete.

you could also use Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2, but to be honest VMWare server is a lot better at the job especially for clustering virtual machines!

As Ed has said at the very least!
This is not something you learn and become an expert on in a few days. The environments I show you how to build are designed to be used for ongoing education and testing.
Clustering requires a certain amount of Windows infrastructure knowledge (i.e. Windows Server, AD, DNS, storage, etc) and this is what you also need to gain experience with.

Thanks guys
In my company sql is in cluster mode,SAN drive but the server team guys handling it, so they are not ready to expose those knowledge to me. so though of leaning from an DBA level surely i'll learn it after getting little more in windows and other areas specified.
