hi,
I want to upgrade from 2005 to 2008, so initially can I upgrade only subscriber to 2008 and leave distributor and publication to 2005

Yes you can but i believe you must reinitialize subscriber after the upgrade.

We're still running merge replication on SQL Server 2005, so I can't say for sure about upgrading to SQL Server 2008. What I do know is that when upgrading to new service packs (and probably CU too) is that you must upgrade the distributor first, then the publisher and finally the subscribers. I haven't tried a different upgrade path, so I can't say for sure that it wouldn't work, but I would NOT recommend you to do it in a production environment without consulting Microsoft first.

how is possible, we have publisher is 2008 and subscriber 2005.
I think it should be subscriber first then publisher, please confirm.
i already test I can replicate the data from 2005 to 2008.

official MS is DPS. in alphabetical order. distributor, publisher, sub
but we have sql 2000 publishers with 2005 subs. i think you just have to create the publication with SSMS

Not according to the documentation in the link I posted. It states that you should first upgrade distributor, then publisher and finally the subscribers. I would contact MS support if you plan to do it in a different order.

According to MS you can update D-S-P unless you use merge replication:

In our environment we had a 2005 Publisher with 2008 Distributor and 2008 Subscribers with no problem. Later we upgraded the Publisher.

I read the documentation and you are correct about transactional replication. I have only used merge replication, on SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005, and the documentation says that for both merge and transactional replication the upgrade path is distributor, publisher and then subscriber.

We use transactional replication and have a few updating subscribers. All of our subscribers were updated to SQL 2008 before we updated the publisher or distributor from SQL 2005. We now have our publisher and distributor on SQL 2008 with a few subscribers on SQL 2008 R2.
This configurations works without problems, but is not recommended by Microsoft and may not be suitable for everyone.
