Hardware Requirements

  • I am being dragged into hardware requirements which I haven't had to worry about in years; so I am quite behind the times.

In the past we for the size databases I am dealing with would have put together a 2 x Dual or Quad Core CPU, 2U Server, PERC 5 or Smart Array Raid Controller and the ability to have 6 drives. Logs on the OS Raid 1 array and Data on the remaining 4 RAID 5 array.

Our budget is limited so a real man's SAN is out of the question and our databases are not even large enough to warrant even if there were a money tree.

Our company is consolidating and going with DELL and from what I can tell they are pulling away from having internal hard drive storage and pushing the Direct attached storage.

If I suggested I had about 250GB consisting of 10 core databases that are all TempDB heavy hitters can someone recommend what they would purchase given the constraints above and/or have I provided enough information for someone to even suggest at this point?

  • I don't have an answer to your good question but you might also want to throw in a note about how many users are going to be hitting this server in total.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
