We recently tried to install SQL Server 2005 on a server and, despite picking all the options and it appearing to install correctly, only the SQL Configuration Manager is there. We can see that the folder structure is there and all the system databases are there on the server. SSMS, Visual Studio etc are missing from All programs. The server is a virtual one and not a physical box
Has anyone seen this before?

Maybe any issue with your virtual machine, but I don't believe so!
Which SQL Server edition you installed in VMachine!?

It was the Enterprise Edition

Correction it was the standard edition.
What are the issues with the virtual machine that it could be?

I said issue, because, it depends also what you installed in your V machine, I think for the OS.
So, the Standard Ed must have all things correct, it supports two node clustering, and hope that you have experience with installing SQL Server, because during installation you will ask for initial configuration step by step!
What to say, reinstall it again from beginning...maybe the others have any same experience.

are you absolutely sure you installed the workstation components?
Is there a shared or a tools directory as part of your installation.
whats under start/all programs/microsoft SQL server 2005
You could always rerun setup and install just workstation components.

So the problem solved with re-installation or anything else!?

The re-installation. I do not why it failed as those discs etc have been used before. Just one of those things I suppose
