We have SQL Server 2005 with SP3 and the database engine is Disabled and SSRS instance is running. As part of regular part of windows update, we have noticed that Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892) is failed and there is no information on why that failed.
Does it required to start the SQL Server database engine for this update to install? As in our case it was disabled.
Event Type:Error
Event Source:Windows Update Agent
Event Category:Installation
Event ID:20
Date:1/6/2010
Time:8:00:00 PM
User:N/A
Computer:ABC
Description:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892).
Are the Security Updates different from Cumulative Updates?
Does it required to install this Security Update patch?
thanks

Whose bright idea is it to disable the relational engine? SSRS runs on the relational engine so how do you plan to run updates without the relational engine?
There are a lot of tasks in SSRS that will error out that the relational engine cannot process the request.

Here is the thing:
On server A, we have installed SQL Server 2005 database engine & SSRS but SSRS is configured in a way that the Report database & ReportTempDB are stored on Server B. So that is why we disabled SQL Service on Server A.
and Are the Security update patches & Cumulative Updates different? Is the cumulative e update patch includes all security updates?
Right now we SQL Server 2005 SP3 (NO cumulative updates). In this case does it require to install this security update patch?
Please advice me

If you are in SP3 you can leave it because SSRS uses Windows authentication so most access is through your AD. But you need to talk to your internal security people and do what is implemented within your company.

thanks,
one more question:

If I install this security update, will the SQL Server instance version changes from 9.0.4035 to new version? or only cumulative update changes the version?
Because, when I started installing this security update, I noticed it's showing SQL Server 2005 SP3 Cumulative hotfix 4053
plz see the attachment

If you are installing the hotfix in the attachment then you must run SQL Server Service.
