Where do they hide the SQL Server Product key ?

  • I thought it was under HELP --> About, but it is not:(

  • Usually that is stored with the physical media. My copy of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition has a sticker with the product key on the inside of the box holding the media.

I just took a look through the registry, and I don't see it stored there anywhere either.

  • Yes i know. The box is in a different physical location 🙁

    Thanks

  • The product key is within the registry but it is not readable. You can find freeware applications that can "recover" the key for you (use at your own discretion type). I have done this for Office and Window OS but not for SQL Server. I came across this one that states it can: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

I came across the location for it in the registry on my server (SQL Server 2005):

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\ProductID
