I installed MS SQL server 2005 in my windows server 2003 web
OS. But when I run the sql server manager studio I get this wizard to
connect to a server and my computer name does not appear on it. But
because I have my laptop connected to my network it, when I browse, it
shows my laptop as a network server instance. I guess because I have
done all my .NET and Java work for my classes there. I do not
understand why, if I installed MS SQL server, it does not install an
instance of an SQL server. I have no idea how to proceed because that's
what I thought I was installing, a server, not only a management
software. Now, my OS does not show me the same "manage my server"
option that I get with my other OS (Windows server 2003 enterprise
edition). and I don't remember whether that OS had an SQL server option
to manage. I don't thinks so because the way that I installed SQL server
XPress there was when I installed Visual Studio. (reminder: in my new
OS I installed Visual Studio after installing SQL server 2005 full
edition, so I don't have the Xpress edition on it). How do make my
computer be an SQL server on this OS?(the server 2003 web edition) I
thought that was done with the SQL server installation.
Thanks,
PS , the HD with the enterprise edition runs on the same Mother board as the web edition OS. I swap HDDs if I need to go back to the enterprise edition, but my objective is to use the web edition. Also, the web edition is not a domain controller, the other one is, and also can be set for all the standard servers, i.e DNS, remote access, VPN, etc.. The web edition does not have that capability.

Can you type the computer name or IP in there?

I long for a job where my databases dont have any pesky users accessing them 🙂

yes, but I typed my computer's name and it did not find a server there, it gave me an error that I did not copy. I did not try typing the ip address.
